The Centre for Māori Suicide Prevention, a vital part of Te Rau Ora, leads kaupapa that uplift the wellbeing of Māori and strengthen community-led solutions to prevent suicide across Aotearoa. Our work is grounded in mātauranga Māori, local leadership, and empowering whānau, rangatahi, and communities to enhance their own wellbeing.
We recognise that the causes of suicide for Māori are complex and multifaceted. That's why our approach champions whānau- and community-driven responses that honour the economic, physical, spiritual, and cultural dimensions of health. Through building capability, raising awareness, and advocating for the determinants that impact Māori wellbeing, we ensure that communities have the tools, voice, and support to sustain their own wellness.
Joining our team means being part of a kaupapa that is deeply relational, culturally anchored, and committed to strengthening Māori futures. We’re looking for people who are passionate about community empowerment, confident working with Māori worldviews and practices, and dedicated to creating meaningful change for whānau and hapori across the motu.
For Māori, the reasons for suicide are many and varied, Te Rau Ora advocates whānau and community-driven approaches to prevent suicide, that take into account the economic, physical and cultural aspects of health. In raising awareness about suicide and its prevention. Te Rau Ora's focus is to identify certain determinants, making sure these are recognised and acted on. Building the capacity of Māori whānau and communities to self-advocate and maintain wellness is a key aspect of this approach.
